To celebrate the Hajj pilgrimage more than 1.7 million Muslims are walking around the Kabba in Saudi Arabia. After two days from Hajj starting date, Eid al-Adha celebration begins in the holy city Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It starts from the desert valley with Islamic pilgrimage.

Eid al-Adha Begins 

The start of Eid al-Adha depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon and its celebration can vary in different countries around the world. Celebrations of Eid al-Adha vary around the world. Muslims greet each other by saying ‘Eid Mubarak' on during the festival which involves prayers and visits to friends and family.

The festival commemorates Abraham’s sacrifice to God and in some parts of the world Muslims sacrifice livestock such as cows, sheep or goat.

The celebration of Eid Al-Adha is symbolic of sacrifice and is a joyous occasion. Salatul Eid is fard upon all Muslims in the tradition of the sunnah. This holiday is of great importance to all adherents of Islam as it is believed to be wajib by many scholars.

Here is some Sunnah of Eid al-Adha you should follow:

  • To adorn oneself according to the Shariah, by:

a. Performing ghusl (Shower before going for Eid prayer)

b. Brush one’s teeth, using a miswak if possible;

c. Apply perfume;

d. Wear the best clothing one possesses, without excess. White, when available, is optimal;

  • To wake up early, in order to prepare for the Sunnah of the day;
  • To go early to the place the Eid prayer is taking place;
  • To delay eating until after the Eid al-Adha prayer;
  • To return from the Eid prayer by a different route to the one taken there, as established by the Prophet’s practice (Allah bless him & give him peace);
  • To walk, when reasonably possible without hardship;
  • To give the takbirs of Eid.
  • Takbeer on the day of Eid
  • In Eid Al Fitr - the Sunnah was to eat something sweet before going to the Eid Prayer, but in Eid Al Adha, you do not eat anything before the Eid Salah.
  • Go to Masjid from a route and return home from a different route.
